🐾 History of the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The English Staffordshire Bull Terrier (lovingly known as the Staffy) originated in Staffordshire, England, as their name suggests.
They were originally bred for the now outlawed sport of bull baiting and were developed by crossing local Terriers with Bulldogs. The English Staffy we know today is slightly larger than the original dogs bred before the 20th century.
⚡ Temperament and Personality
An English Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a breed for the faint-hearted. They are confident, driven and energetic dogs that need a strong, calm and consistent owner who can set clear boundaries and follow through with them. Without leadership and structure, a Staffy can become stressed, destructive and may develop unwanted or even dangerous behaviours.
A bored Staffy will quickly find ways to entertain themselves, often at the expense of your belongings. It is important to understand the incredible stamina this breed possesses. A short daily walk is simply not enough.
The English Staffordshire Bull Terrier is best suited to a home where they can spend plenty of time with their family, exploring the world and keeping busy. Along with physical exercise, they thrive on mental enrichment thanks to their intelligence. They are courageous and confident dogs that approach life head first. They are deeply devoted to their family and naturally wary of strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. They thrive when given a job to do and excel in agility and obedience sports. When well exposed and socialised from a young age, they generally do well with other dogs and can happily live with other pets in the home.
📏 Size and Appearance of the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier
A small, solid and muscular dog, the Staffy is square in appearance and have a beautiful and distinctive smile.
Their short, smooth coat comes in a range of colours including white, black, blue, red, fawn and brindle, with or without white markings.
Males grow to around 41cm and weigh up to 17kg, while females reach approximately 38cm and weigh up to 16kg.
✂️ Grooming
Grooming an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier is easy. Their short, smooth coat only requires a firm brush a few times each week to remove loose hair and keep it looking healthy. Wiping their coat over with a damp cloth will also help restore its natural shine. Bathing can be done as needed.
❤️ Health
The breed can be prone to certain eye conditions, and some cases of hip dysplasia have been reported. Mast cell tumours are also relatively common within the breed, so health testing of breeding parents should always be considered when choosing a puppy.
The average life expectancy of an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier is 12 to 14 years.
