The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a striking, athletic and highly intelligent dog known for its African heritage and strong loyalty to its family. With its distinguished ridge of hair and calm, confident nature, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is unmissable when you pass it!

Origin Of The Rhodesian Ridgeback 🐾
The Ridgeback originated in southern Africa, developed by crossing European hunting dogs with the native Khoikhoi dogs, which is where the iconic ridge comes from. Selective breeding produced a resilient, courageous and versatile dog capable of thriving in harsh climates.
Purpose 🎯
Historically, the Ridgeback served as a multi purpose hunting and guarding dog. It was highly valued for tracking and holding large game, including lions, at bay. Beyond hunting, the Rhodesian Ridgeback protected farms and families, making it a dependable working partner. Today, the breed excels in active homes, canine sports and roles that utilise its intelligence and stamina.

The Ridgeback is muscular, athletic and symmetrical, with a balanced structure that supports speed and endurance. Its signature feature is the ridge of hair growing in the opposite direction along the spine.
Accepted coat colours:
- Light wheaten
- Wheaten
- Red wheaten
Small white markings on the chest and toes are also permitted in the breed standard.
Breed standard sizes:

Grooming and Care 🧼
A Rhodesian Ridgeback is relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming. Its short, sleek coat only requires weekly brushing to reduce shed hair and keep the skin healthy. Routine nail trims, dental care and regular ear checks are important. Although grooming is simple, the Rhodesian Ridgeback needs daily exercise and mental enrichment to remain balanced and content.
Temperament Of The Rhodesian Ridgeback🧡
The Ridgeback is confident, loyal and intelligent, forming deep bonds with its family. While affectionate at home, it can be naturally reserved with strangers. Consistent training and early socialisation are essential due to the breed’s independent mindset. When raised to be a well balanced, satisfied dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback is gentle, steady and an excellent companion for active households.
Health ❤️🩹
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is generally robust, but like all breeds, it has some predispositions. Potential health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, dermoid sinus, thyroid issues and certain cardiac conditions. Because the breed is deep chested, it may also be at risk for bloat.
